Puppy Has Been Part of the Family for a Week

Updated: May 27, 2020

Funniest dog I've ever seen!

Buddy has picked his name . And seems to know it. Things are going well, I would almost say he’s house trained, but we all know that would be the kiss of death. He’s only really broken once in the house, and that was really on me because I confused him - wanted him to go out a new door, when he wanted to go out the door he knew - in all the confusion he gave up and squatted. Corrected right away - so all went well. Another similar episode a couple days later, he was interested in using the steps (instead of the ramp) in the garage but not quite sure - spent time in the perpetual spot of “should I, or shouldn’t I“, and squatted on the ramp after he decided that the steps were for another day. He's up to 18 lbs, and the personality is starting to come out. He seems to have a good nose, not really intimidated by anything. If something is new, he sits and seems to consider it. We’ve had some loud noises - door slamming, farm equipment and some gunfire in the woods - and he really doesn’t seem to alert unduly. If we scare up a bird while traveling around, he seems very interested. We haven't pulled out the fishing pole and chucker wing yet, but that will probably be this week. He and the cat have made an acquaintance, but its still tentative.

Although the schedule is sort of "late to bed, early to rise", he doesn't fuss about doing the crate and really has started to take some of his naps in it. He's finally realized that the Muck Boots aren't the only thing I wear, but with the weather lately, I can't blame him for making that assumption. He's hung with me in the basement while I'm potting up plants, and also over at the workshop while I'm finishing the wine, and seems content if there's a bed or a towel on the floor. Feet have been trimmed - seemed to be no problems - nails this weekend.
